LENTEN CHURCH LAWS

Abstinence from eating meat is observed on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent by Catholics 14 years and older.

Fasting is observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those bound by this rule may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted as necessary to maintain strength as needed. Eating between meals is not permitted.

Obviously, church laws of abstinence and fasting ask for a minimum effort. The Lenten season encourages us to freely impose on our daily lives a measure of fasting and abstaining from life's daily comforts and excesses.

The spiritual purpose of fasting and abstaining is to allow our hearts, through discipline of our bodies, to be freed from attachments that might block us from hearing and responding to the call of God in our hearts.

DAILY OFFERING PRAYER

Eternal Father,
I offer you everything I do this day:
My work, my prayers, my apostolic efforts;
My time with family and friends;
My hours of relaxation;
My difficulties, problems, distress, which I shall try to bear with patience.
Join these, my gifts, to the unique offering that Jesus Christ your Son renews today in the Eucharist.
Grant, I pray,
That vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus,
My life this day may be of service to You and to Your children
And help consecrate the world to You.
Amen.
